Liphook grew up where the old Portsmouth road met the railway, and you can read that in the roofs. Round the Square and along the Portsmouth Road the houses are Victorian and Edwardian, slate and clay tile on steep pitches with tall chimneys. Bramshott, the old village next door, is older again, with cottages under clay tile that has been there for generations. Then from the sixties onwards the village filled out to the north and east with big estates under concrete interlocking tiles, and those are now the roofs coming up for their first re-roof.

It is a wooded, wet corner of the county, right on the Sussex border. Moss on the north slopes, leaves in the gutters and valleys, and a lot of houses with mature trees over them. The felt under a sixties roof does not like forty years of damp, and once it goes the tiles are only half a roof.
