Roofers in Four Marks

A village of bungalows, high up

Four Marks is one of the highest villages in Hampshire, strung out along the Winchester Road between Alton and Alresford, and nearly all of it was built in the last hundred years. That gives it a particular kind of roof: hipped, fairly shallow, concrete interlocking tiles, a lot of them on bungalows and chalet bungalows with dormers cut into the slope. Medstead next door is much the same.

Being high up matters. The wind comes across the ridge with nothing to stop it, and the first things to go on a hipped roof up here are the ridge and hip tiles. Mortar bedding cracks, a hip tile lifts, and then rain gets under the tiles next to it. A dry-fix ridge system, mechanically fixed instead of bedded in mortar, is the answer on a roof like that, and it is a job that can be done on its own without touching the rest of the roof.

Ridge and hip repairs, or a full dry-ridge conversion along the top of an existing roof. Re-tiling hipped bungalow roofs where the tiles have gone porous and the felt has gone underneath. Flat roofs on the dormers, in fibreglass, when the felt on them has blistered or the deck has gone soft. Chimneys re-pointed or rebuilt. And the porches, garages and rear extensions that chalet bungalows tend to have collected over the years.
