Two kinds of roof in Alton

Alton has an old town and a new one, and they need different things. Along the High Street and down towards the station the houses are Georgian and Victorian: steep pitches, clay tiles and a fair amount of slate, brick chimneys that have had a century of weather and lead that has been patched more than once. Those roofs usually want repairing properly rather than replacing, and the tiles need matching, not swapping for something modern.

Ring the town and you are into the twentieth century. The estates off Anstey Road, out towards Holybourne and on the Basingstoke Road side were built from the fifties through to the nineties, most of them with concrete interlocking tiles on a shallower pitch. Concrete tiles last a long time but the felt and battens underneath them do not, and a lot of those roofs are now at the point where the first tile that slips shows you the felt has gone brittle behind it.
